Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol is a region in the province of Malaga in Southern Spain. Costa del Sol translates literally in English to Coast of the Sun, and has earned its name by averaging over 300 days of sun a year. Although originally made up only of a series of small fishing villages, the region has been completely transformed over the last few decades into a world renowned tourist destination.

It includes the city of Malaga, and the wealthy towns of Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas and Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara, Velez Malaga, Nerja, Torrox, Estepona, San Luis de Sabinillas, the community of Sotogrande, San Roque and La Línea de la Concepción.

The area has seem a variety of cultures establish themselves in the area over the years including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Visigoths and Moors.
In the last 50 years the Costa del Sol has gone through several stages of development. With a large property boom in the last 10 years vast improvements have come to the area, with motorway extensions, ports & marinas, shopping centres, etc… Although the area might have lost its rural charm, it has become a cosmopolitan area that attracts people from all over Spain and the world. The standards of living are also continuously increasing.
